I remember one of the kids in my extended family had received a program called Magix or something like that.

There are all kinds of options on the consumer side, ranging in price from $30-ish to over $100. It was really popular with a couple of news editors I used to work with several years ago and appeared to be a stable and no-frills kind of application. The only other pro-level editor I'm aware of right now is Edius. It is more affordable software, and there are different levels to choose from that provide a fair tradeoff between price and features/performance. Adobe no longer sells permanent non-subscription licenses for any of its professional software titles.Īlternatively, there is Avid, which is another industry standard title. You can pay around $20/month for Premiere all by itself, or you can get access to Adobe's entire software catalog for $50/month. If you don't need the professional features which are missing from the latest FCP X, consider getting that.Premiere is really the closest alternative to FCP. FCP is relatively easy to begin with, but can still scale to bigger projects. I usually recommend Final Cut Pro, even for people who don't have a Mac and will need to buy one. But depending on your needs, it may work well for you.įinally, for home video editing, there are several other Windows programs (Vegas, etc). Here, some may argue that it actually is professional - and it is sometimes used for ads or for some TV programs - but I never heard of feature length movie released in theaters and editied on Premiere. The semi-professional alternative would be Adobe Premiere Pro. The learning curve may be steeper than with Final Cut, but if you envision editing as a profession, you will need to know it anyway. In Windows, you have the really professional Avid systems. Some of these programs may be good for some specialized task, but none is a serious general purpose video editor.

My main machine is Linux, and I did have a look at a few things like Cinelerra, Kino, Blender, etc. (the latest version X is not quite ready yet for Pro use, but probably will be eventually) Some may argue whether FCP is truly professional, but anyway it is used as such by many editors. This is probably not the best place for your question, but anyway.ĭo you need a home video editing solution, or a professional tool?
